A teaspoon per gallon is the most I'd use if you have fish in the tank. Plants may even struggle a bit with that much salt.

I'm sure it is. It probably doesn't add a lot, and fish need some mineralization anyway.

I decided a while ago I was going to start collecting my own wood from streams. For now I'm avoiding Eucalyptus unless it's in my native pond (I'm in Australia so Eucalyptus is abundant), since I know Eucalyptus oil is something local fish are adapted to but imported species may not be. But beyond that... I'm just taking the risk. I'm prioritizing wood collected from water ways that I know contain healthy fish populations. At home I'll scrub off the detritus and boil it, set it in a quarentine tank for a bit then if nothing obvious goes wrong, I call it tank ready.

I get all my plants from the lakes I go fishing in. I put them straight in my aquarium from the lake. No rinsing. This helps get the tank become a complete ecosystem. I never had a problem in doing it this way. Doesn't seem to phase my angel fish.

Recently, I had an ammonia/nitrite spike in my 10G due to overfeeding. One corydoras died, I pulled him out and started removing detritus buildup before a water change. As I did it I started to see hundreds of detritus worms swimming all over the tank. I guess this was due to disturbing that detritus before vacuuming it. I was worried if that's a serious bloom, so I was trying my best to suck them in a tube while changing water, but the number seemed to stay the same, and I was panicking a bit as it was my first time seeing these little guys and there was such a crazy amount of them. A quick google search calmed me down, and after an hour they settled in the sand doing their thing. This was in the morning. I knew that detritus worms play one of the essential roles in low-tech unfiltered fatherfsh-style aquariums, but deep inside I still didn't like the fact that there are thousands of microworms on my work desk. But today I saw your video, and it thought wait a minute, the vermicompost is my favorite houseplant fertilizer, and detritus worms might be doing the same thing with fish poop and stuff, contributing to the cycle. Thank you very much for discussing that important topic, so people can think more of what's going on in their aquariums instead of gravel vaccing like crazy trying to stop the natural cycle. Greetings from UA Cheers! Edit: plus detritus worms can be a perfect food for nano fish in a low maintenance tank. They can eat them especially at night e.g. when you're on vacation

It’s funny some of the bigger clumsy looking fish. They just kind of move around with complete disregard of the others. We’ve had a few like that in the past and have a couple now as well. They’re the best.

I am planning on turning my 75 gallon into a natural tank and found myself here to see what plants you are finding. On a side note, i noticed the nail polish and wondered, that must symbolize something, looked it up, and love the cause! I dont understand how some of these comments are immediately like, "nail polish, run!!!" Probably dont like any vintage Bowie either, 😅

Hi Dan! How are you? I could really use your advice. I got two white bettas from a store that kept fish in terrible conditions; many looked sick or were already dead. They’re in separate tanks. One is fine, but the other developed black edges on its fins and some grey/black parts on its body. I initially thought it was fin rot and started treatment with Sera Omnipur (1 day). However, after researching more, I’ve found that bettas can change color quickly, but others say it could be ammonia burn? The fish is eating, he is active… but this is progressing very quickly; looking forward to your advice. Thank you in advance!!

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Hi, I understand, thank you! I had bettas that changed colors before but not at this speed. I’m still unsure if this is fin rot or something, I’ve decided to keep him on the medication just in case but this the end of day 4 and honestly I don’t see any difference… overall he does look better compared to when I got him but he still has the black edges plus a bit of blue now. He has 3 more days of treatment but I’m hoping he is just changing colors

Once I get a certain number, I find it unnecessary to clean the glass anymore. Though I've also got other snails competing for softer algaes, so of course that incentivizes the nerites to go after the hard diatom on the glass. But yeah, everyone is always saying "cleaning the glass is part of the hobby". No it's not, it's an ecological design decision. Personally, the white eggs don't really bother me, and no-glass-cleaning is awesome.

20 something years ago, I was out with my gf at the time by this small pond that sat twenty feet from Lake Michigan in the city and saw this tiny, half inch crayfish by the shore waters of said pond and scooped it up into a bottle, took it home, and literally raised it to an inch and a half in a 6 inch round Petrie dish that was 4 inches tall... Just fed it bloodworms that I had from the last betta I'd raised... Was gonna grab a tank but ended up freeing the guy back to the pond... Now I'm considering doing this exact same thing in this video but doing it just as proper and to the best of my ability... How do you "sanitize" rocks properly? Or add wood?
